ORIGIN

Bioactive Totarol™ is a naturally occurring plant extract that develops in the heartwood of the New Zealand Totara tree. This natural phenomenon protects the tree from bacteria attacks and environmental influences, allowing the tree to grow for thousands of years and making it impervious to rot, even after it has fallen.

The Totara derives from the Podocarpus tree family which dates back over 100 million years. Before New Zealand existed as a landmass, in the time of Gondwanaland stood the ancestors of the native Totara tree. About 80 million years ago as Aotearoa started to take shape, so did the modern-day Totara; and there it grew in abundance, only in New Zealand.

Throughout history, the indigenous Maori and colonial settlers harnessed the majestic strength and long-lasting nature of this ancient tree and built houses (whares), boats (wakas), fences, railway tracks and more.
